Watch The First 30 Mins Of God of War: Ascension

A video today surfaced unveiling the first half-an-hour of Sony’s God of War: Ascension. At an event in Hollywood, Sony Santa Monica presented a 30-minute gameplay demo of Kratos’ single-player adventure in God of War: Ascension.

As well as the usual faced paced blood-pumping cinematics we’ve become accustomed to seeing in God of War titles, we get a lengthy look at the gameplay itself and it’s as intense as ever. The gameplay video shows off Kratos moving around Ascensions hundred-armed giant Hecatonchires in a fashion that rivals God of War 3’s opening moments of gameplay.

The younger Kratos has a few fresh abilities, such as being able to tether enemies with his chains and disarming enemies to use their weapons against them. The game takes place shortly after Kratos mistakenly kills his own family, and it has been said that we’ll see a more human side of Kratos. Many gamers have come to love the God of War games, but at the same time despise Kratos as a character. This may be the game that allows Kratos to win gamers over and show he does have a human side rooted somewhere deep inside.

While I still feel like God of War: Ascension doesn’t do much to innovate upon the franchise, I can safely say that I’m looking forward to embarking on another adventure with the bad tempered Spartan. It’s still very impressive to see the environments shifting and giant foes flailing in the background, all during gameplay.

Sure this game is more of the same, with a new story and multiplayer attached, but maybe that’s all we need for now until we get to the next generation. With Sony’s big announcement scheduled for February 20th, we may possibly not be too far off from a next gen God of War game. Perhaps in another year or two?

Be sure to have your say in the comments below. And look out for us to discuss this video on an upcoming podcast.

God of War: Ascension is set to release on the PlayStation 3 on March 12.
