This years Madden NFL game will not be called Madden 14 as you would expect. Instead, this year it will be called Madden 25 to celebrate the franchises 25th anniversary.
In a press release Cam Weber, general manager of American football at EA Sports, said “There’s no better way to celebrate and mark the culmination of 25 years of innovation than by naming this year’s game Madden NFL 25.”
Once again fans will get to vote on the cover of the game, and this time voters will get the choice of NFL legends as well as current players. Normally the game is named after the upcoming year, however with this game being called Madden 25 this will cause endless confusion in the future. What will they call the 2025 version? Will they just use 25+ from now on?
Polygon reached out to EA with this exact thought in mind, the reply they received stated “The Madden NFL 25 name was specifically chosen to represent the 25th anniversary of Madden. We have no announcements regarding the franchise name beyond this year.”
Personally I think it is a bit strange to change the numbering of the series after so long. Why complicate matters when they already have a system that works? I do admire their guts to change it now though and leave their future employees with a problem.
What do you think of the name? Will you voting for the cover? Let me know in the comments below.
