Mass Effect 4’s Story To Be Completely Unrelated To Shepard

Mass Effect 4’s lead writer has revealed that the next game in the series will have nothing to do with the series’ main protagonist Commander Shepard.

In an interview with Complex, lead writer Mac Walters explained why the series is going in this direction:

“Well, I can’t get into details, but the idea is that we have agreed to tell a story that doesn’t relate necessarily to any of the Shepard events at all, whatsoever.”

“That’s what we’ve been deciding for a while. But throughout it all, one of the key things is that it has to be Mass Effect. It can’t just feel like a spin-off. It has to feel like a Mass Effect game at its heart, at its core. Just without the Shepard character or the Shepard specific companions.”

To me it seems strange to call the game Mass Effect 4 and to not mention the previous three games at all. I think it would make more sense to start a new spin-off trilogy instead of calling this an outright sequel. I think that will confuse a lot of people. However, I am looking forward to a new Mass Effect game. I felt that ME3 was rushed compared to ME2, so I am eager to see what they can do in Mass Effect 4.

Let me know in the comments if you also think it’s weird that Mass Effect 4 will not relate to the previous events at all. I think it totally is!
