I know many of you are thinking “Please! No more remasters,” as you read the title of this article. Even I’m getting tired of hearing about games being remastered. It’s clearly lazy and a way for publishers to make quick money while their newer titles are still in development.
With that being said, if publishers are going to continue with this trend then they may as well remaster games that make sense. Sleeping Dogs is an awesome game and clearly one of the best open world games in recent memory but did it really deserve a remaster? I think not. Here’s a list of five previous gen games that I’d love to see get the remastered treatment for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
Hands down, Gears of War was in the top five list of best new IPs created last generation. Gears of War 2 was the first game I owned upon buying an Xbox 360 and I enjoyed every minute of it (along with the other two games). The original Gears of War was known for pushing the envelope forward in terms of graphics, and it was hands down the best looking game at the time of release. So when it comes to being remastered, there’s no doubt that the Gears of War trilogy would translate well to next-gen technology.
Besides being some of the most beautiful JRPGs ever made, the Final Fantasy XIII trilogy is underrated. Sure, they’re nowhere near as expansive as a traditional Final Fantasy game, but they’re visually stunning and the battle systems are addictive. Square Enix are already known for milking the Final Fantasy brand in any way possible so this suggestion certainly isn’t too far-fetched. However, if it were to be announced, I’m sure they’d receive tons of backlash for not remastering either Final Fantasy VII or Final Fantasy XII first.
Here’s one that nobody would complain about. This game was certainly a sleeper hit last generation and 90% of people that I know who played this game have praised it. This game alone signified Rockstar’s improvement in video game development. Everyone was a little concerned after getting Grand Theft Auto IV, but Red Dead Redemption is the game that showed us Rockstar is still an innovator when it comes to sandbox games. I’m sure there’s still many who may have missed out on Red Dead Redemption, and with rumors of a sequel still persistent I feel like it would be a good call to remaster this gem.
Everyone who knows me knows that I’m the biggest Metal Gear Solid nut around, but that’s not the only reason Metal Gear Solid 4 has made my list. Earlier this year we were sold a glorified demo (Ground Zeroes) from Konami/Kojima. Sure, the gameplay and graphics were outstanding, but we were given one small map and one main mission to complete. So what would be nice is to revisit the world of Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots in 1080p / 60fps on both the PS4 and Xbox One. This will make the wait for MGSV: The Phantom Pain much more bearable plus Xbox loyalists would finally get a taste of what MGS4 had to offer (besides cut-scenes). I also think that we’d save Old Snake’s lungs from all that smoking he did during the loading screens because surely the loading times would be shorter, right?
Let’s be real, this is so close to actually happening that I wouldn’t be surprised if it was announced before I hit publish on this article. The only thing that makes me think otherwise is that Naughty Dog has suffered many job cuts recently. But who knows when we might see Uncharted 4? It would certainly make sense to remaster the Uncharted trilogy for the PS4 in the meantime, especially when we already know it would move some serious units. Just look at the sales for The Last of Us: Remastered, those numbers alone show that Naughty Dog are putting out such quality experiences that people barely have to think twice about buying the same game twice a year apart. It’s been a few years since we got Uncharted 3 so a remaster of this trilogy would definitely make sense right now.
