Here’s a story that shouldn’t be surprising to anyone who has been following this title. Activision announced today that its latest super-budget game, Destiny, has shipped over $500 million to retail stores and first parties. This isn’t sales numbers, just how much the game has shipped worldwide. Even though this amount isn’t based on how many copies have been sold, it does make it the biggest launch of a new IP in history.
“Based on extraordinary audience demand, retail and first party orders worldwide have exceeded $500 million for Destiny,” said Bobby Kotick, CEO of Activision Blizzard. “This industry milestone marks another blockbuster success for our company and demonstrates our unique ability to create some of the most successful entertainment franchises in the world. The success of Destiny, along with the recent introduction of Blizzard Entertainment’s Hearthstone, is further validation of our unique capabilities to create great entertainment franchises from the ground up.”
Obviously we don’t have the exact amount of games sold to actual costumers or how much of that factored into this $500 million, but I think it’s safe to say that this game will be a monster success (as we said it would be). $500 million is the estimated budget for the game (with $250 million going into advertising alone) so it seems that Activision is well on its way to breaking even (they only get a percentage of the $500 million shipped) and making the company a sizable profit.
When we have exact sales figures, we’ll update you guys so stay tuned.
