Michael Pachter Was Wrong. PS4 Outsells the Xbox One in September

Earlier this week, Wedbush Morgan Securities analyst Michael Pachter made a pretty bold prediction when he said that Microsoft’s Xbox One would outsell Sony’s PlayStation 4 in September. He said this despite the fact that Destiny came out in September and is a game which has been heavily promoted for the PlayStation 4 even though it is a multi-console game.

This prediction seemed pretty far fetched considering how many people bought a PlayStation 4 because of Destiny (especially those fancy white PS4s) and how Sony’s console has consistently outsold Microsoft’s in 2014. There’s also the fact that, as great of a guy as he is, Michael Pachter has been known to have a spotty track record with his predictions.

Today we know that mister Pachter was wrong. NPD numbers show that the PlayStation 4 was the best selling console in September. The console managed to sell 550k units in the month of September according to Venture Beat. Microsoft has yet to reveal their sales numbers for the month. It should also be noted that Destiny actually managed to sell more on the Xbox One despite how heavily promoted it was for the PlayStation 4. This didn’t seem to affect PS4’s overall sales however.

Below is the official tweet sent out by Sony.

It will be interesting to hear what Michael Pachter has to say about his prediction being wrong. He’s been in this position before so I’m sure he’s not bother by it in the least. In any case, this is good news for Sony whose current-gen console has been all but unstoppable this year. If I were to predict anything, it’s that the PlayStation 4 will continue it’s forward momentum for the rest of the year and for the next few months after that. I’ll make a public apology if I’m wrong.
