Sony has come out and pressed the issue of 3D, basically foretelling that 3D is the future whether consumers are ready or not. When questioned on the issue by EDGE online, Sony UK boss Ray Maguire threw a shot at Microsoft saying that they will need to implement it on the Xbox 360 somehow. It seems he also has his doubts on whether Microsoft will even be able to pull it off on their system, Maguire said the following words to EDGE on the issue.
“I would say that they have to. Whether they can is a different matter, but of course everyone will have to get into 3D because it’s the natural way of viewing the world. So why would you stay in a 2D world if you have the ability to do 3D? We have the ability to do 3D right now with the devices consumers already have in their living rooms.”
This is very much one of those times where I have to disagree with Sony. In my personal opinion I still think it’s too soon to push 3D on a substantial degree, seeing as both Sony and Microsoft are currently trying so persistently to sell us on their motion technology. It should be one investment at a time in my opinion. If they wish for me to invest in motion technology this year, then I damn sure will not be buying a 3D TV any time soon. And I am sure the majority of consumers agree. Of course there is nothing wrong with throwing 3D in a couple games as an option for those who enjoy it at this point, just don’t expect it to take off as a standard this early on.
