Chivalry: Medieval Warfare Preview – Blood and Glory

Torn Banner Studios is a small indie developer that got started making one of the most popular mods for Half-Life 2: Age of Chivalry. The mod featured a fast-paced first-person melee combat system and garnered praise for its accomplishments within the constraints of being only a free mod. Now, Team Chivalry expanded and formed their new studio for their first fully-fledged release: Chivalry: Medieval Warfare.

Chivarly is billed as an FPS (First-Person Slasher) that can also be played in third-person view. The game tasks you with competing against other players online (single player bot matches are available as well) to complete a series of objectives on various different maps. There are no “game modes” as each map has its own gameplay objectives and story to follow. You may be tasked with simply killing the other team in an Arena, or maybe you have to murder all the villagers in the other towns city, break down the castle door and eventually kill their king? Each map has its own unique set of objectives and features ensuring gameplay variety, or you can set it to free-for-all mode or team deathmatch, it’s all up to you!

Combat consists of wielding one of the over 60 types of weapons and using your mouse to strategically attack and block incoming strikes from opponents. Combat is fast, fierce and brutal and you can easily be killed in a single blow if not careful. Complete with appropriately gory decapitation and dismemberment  the game adequately captures the tone of the era in striking detail. I can’t wait to stake my claim to fame and earn my share of blood and glory on the battlefield.

Chivalry: Medieval Warfare released today, October 16th on Steam, their official site, and other outlets available from their buy now page.
