Ubisoft: Same Engine On Console And Tablets In Three Years

Ubisoft’s chief executive officer Yves Guillemot has said the he expects to be running the same games on both tablets and consoles in the near future.

In an interview with Game Industry, Guillemot spoke at length about the future of videogames and tablets, specifically about the advantages of using a second screen to enhance the game.

“I expect maybe in three or four years from now to be able to have mostly the same engine running on tablet and the main console. On The Division, we are using the same assets on the console and the tablets. In the future, it will be easier for us to provide this kind of experience,” he said.

“This new generation proves that we’re moving in the right direction. For each game you’ll see in the next two years, the tablet will connect with the social and new consoles to make one complete experience. You have a way for players to have experiences in the same universe in a different way.

The recent release of XCOM on iOS shows that games can be ported to tablets, so it is not surprising to hear that bigger games could be making their way to tablets in a few years time. Ubisoft seem to be really pushing the second screen gimmick, personally I’m not buying into it yet, nothing has jumped out at me that shows me how it could possibly enhance the experience. Maybe Ubisoft will finally show me a good reason to use a second screen.

Check out the full interview linked above, it’s pretty interesting. Let me know in the comments what you think about what Guillemot said, will tablet gaming be a challenger to consoles in the future?
