Sony Confirms PlayStation VR 2 Hardware for the PS5

Sony has decided to set the tone for 2022 with the announcement that both a PlayStation VR 2 headset and a PlayStation VR 2 Sense controller are on the way. During their CES 2022 press conference, Jim Ryan announced the next generation VR hardware which will introduce a new generation of VR games.

PSVR 2 will feature new sensory features, enhanced control tracking, and upgraded visual fidelity. It will have an OLED display with 2000 x 2040 per eye resolutions. It is said to be able to support 90Hz/120Hz with 110 field-of-view. The device will connect to the PS5 using a USB-C cable connection.

The PlayStation Blog also mentions an Eye Tracking feature that can detect the motion of your eyes and use it as input for the gaming experience. It will be interesting to see what gameplay mechanics come from this feature alone.

They have also announced a game that will utilize the technology of the PSVR 2: Horizon Call of the Mountain developed by Guerilla and Firesprite.

Sony faces serious competition from the likes of Oculus and Vive. But with a new generation of technology, Sony has an opportunity to craft a unique VR gaming experience that can only be had with the PlayStation 5 and PSVR 2. They will be able to use the gaming hardware, headset, and unique software in unison to make something we can’t find anywhere else.

There are currently no details on when we can expect a release for the PlayStation VR 2, but with the whole year ahead of us, we can all look forward to more announcements in the near future. My bet would be that we’ll see the hardware during the holiday 2022 period.
