It’s once again time to look over the latest NPD numbers. While August 2015 saw a slight drop in sales compared to the same time last year, the numbers show that the industry is doing well overall.
New games and consoles sold at retail stories in the United States brought in a total of $548 million in August. This is actually a 2% decline for the industry compared to last year. Game sales account for $207.9 million of those numbers, and is down 10% from last year’s $231.3 million. Hardware sales make up $190.5 million, which is 2% lower than August 2014’s $195.3 million.
As far as console sales go, Sony’s PlayStation 4 has once again beaten out competitors Microsoft and Nintendo, though the company did not reveal any hard numbers either, telling GamesBeat: “We would like to thank our fans and partners for their ongoing support of PlayStation and for making PS4 the top selling console and No. 1 in software sales in North America in August.” Xbox One Marketing Boss Mike Nichols told GamesBeat that “Xbox One continued to gain momentum in August, with sales in the U.S. up 26 percent over August 2014.” Nintendo declined to comment.
Now let’s check out the top 10 games of August 2015:
- Madden NFL 16 (PS4, Xbox One, 360, PS3)
- Minecraft (360, PS3, Xbox One, PS4)
- Gears of War: Ultimate Edition (Xbox One)
- Grand Theft Auto V (PS4, Xbox One, 360, PS3, PC)
- Lego: Jurassic World (360, 3DS, Wii U, PS3, Xbox One, PS4, Vita)
- Rare Replay (Xbox One)
- Until Dawn (PS4)
- Call of Duty: Black Ops Combo Pack (360, PS3)
- Batman: Arkham Knight (PS4, Xbox One)
- Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare (PS4, Xbox One, 360, PS3, PC)
Madden NFL 16 topping out the list isn’t surprising seeing as how it’s always the number one game in August. We also see a lot of the usual suspects like Minecraft, Grand Theft Auto V, and two Call of Duty Games. Batman: Arkham Knight continues to hold strong, as does Lego: Jurassic Park and Rare Replay.
Surprisingly enough, Gears of War: Ultimate Edition is in the top five, despite the lukewarm to negative press reaction to it. The only new IP on this list is the horror game Until Dawn which came in at number seven.
