The Steep Price of Revenge – An Interview with Get Even’s Bethany Antonia

What would you do to right a wrong? To get back at someone? How would you direct your anger, embarrassment and frustration of being bullied and humiliated? Would you want to get even?

Netflix’s revenge teen drama, Get Even asks these questions and more, when four teenage girls from different social circles come together in detention, after realizing their upper-crust private school doesn’t adequately protect students from bullies. They set out to create an organization called DGM (Don’t Get Mad) to expose the wrongdoings of the powerful, teachers and students alike.

The team consists of ringleader Kitty Wei (Kim Adis), tech genius Margot Rivers (Bethany Antonia), daredevil Bree Deringer (Mia McKenna-Bruce), and popular girl Olivia Hayes (Jessica Alexander).

Netflix's 'Get Even' Is a Glossy Prep School Murder Mystery

What starts off a simple revenge plot develops into a tale of lies, betrayal and murder as the girls realize getting even comes at a heavy price not everyone can afford to pay.

The 10-part series is based on a book of the same name and features a multiracial cast where Black and Asian actors are centered. Refusing to fall into the white-centric pitfalls which afflicts teen dramas, Get Even sees teens of color leading the charge, falling into casual romances and taking a stand. Even better, the show does so without making it such a big deal, counteracting entrenched YA tropes along the way.

The Koalition spoke with Bethany Antonia about the show finding success in America, the power of friendship, the darkness of getting even, the plot twist no one saw coming and more.
