The first trailer for the Disney+ Obi-Wan Kenobi limited series is finally here.
Set to premiere May 25th it is set in between the events of the prequel trilogy and the original Star Wars trilogy, Obi-Wan Kenobi stars Ewan McGregor as the famed Jedi master and Anakin’s former mentor before his young padawan turned into Darth Vader. Ten years after the massacre of Order 66, Kenobi is living on Tatooine and watching over soon-to-be hero Luke Skywalker, when a new adventure reunites him with Anakin (Hayden Christensen).
As seen in the trailer above, it begins with Obi-Wan laying low in the sandy dunes of Tatooine while keeping watch over a young Luke, who lives with his Uncle Owen and Aunt Beru. “Stay hidden,” he says, as the iconic “Duel of the Fates” theme from Phantom Menace begins.
The series will bring previously animated Star Wars characters to live action — this time with the Grand Inquisitor, the main antagonist in Star Wars Rebels. Rupert Friend will play the villain, hunting down the surviving Jedi by Emperor Palpatine. As seen in the trailer, The Queen’s Gambit actor Moses Ingram plays an Inquisitor named Reva, who hunts down Obi-Wan and wields a red lightsaber. While we don’t actually see Darth Vader, we can hear the familiar sound of his breathing at the end of the trailer.
This will be the first time McGregor and Christensen have reprised their Star Wars roles since Revenge of the Sith in 2005. Christensen will also be seen in appear in the Disney+ Ahsoka series in 2023.
The cast includes Joel Edgerton and Bonnie Piesse as Owen and Beru Lars, the uncle and aunt of Luke Skywalker, Kumail Nanjiani, Indira Varma, O’Shea Jackson Jr., Sung Kang, Simone Kessell, Benny Safdie and Maya Erskine.
The series is written by Joby Harold and directed by Deborah Chow, both of whom also serve as executive producers. Chow previously directed two episodes in the first season of The Mandalorian. McGregor executive produces along with Kathleen Kennedy and Michelle Rejwan.
