Prime Video’s The Consultant Trailer Shows Life at CompWare Is Not Your Typical 9-to-5

What if Elon Musk consulted a gaming company that’s in desperate need of restructuring? What if he had complete control of the company and everything he says goes?

In Prime Video’s The Consultant, Christoph Waltz’s Regus Patoff is a pandemic-era corporate worker’s nightmare. Showing he means business; he proclaims in the trailer for the dark comedy series, “For those who work remotely, you have one hour to get here, or you’ll be terminated,” he says in a trailer for the dark comedy-thriller series.

The series (spanning 8 episodes) explores the darker side, possibly sinister side of a relationship between boss and employee and what employees are willing to do to keep their jobs and climb up the chain. At its heart, The Consultant is a twisted, comedic-thriller series that explores the sinister relationship between boss and employee.

“How many of these patrons do you think we could fight? I think I could fight four of them and you could subdue the remaining three,” before laughing.

The Consultant is based on Bentley Little’s 2015 novel of the same name, the characters and story in this thrilling new series unfold in new and unexpected ways. When Patoff is hired as a consultant to improve the business at the app-based gaming company CompWare, employees experience new demands and challenges that put everything into question, including their lives.

Judging by the trailer, fans of the book can see similarities with the series with the essences of this passage coming to mind:

“Things are going well,” the consultant said. “Not just here but everywhere. Businesses are becoming more efficient, doing more with less. The economy’s coming back, and they’re not hiring, not wasting money on people. They’re staying lean and mean, boosting profits but not payrolls. It’s part of the overall strategy, and we’ve been working on it for a long time. Why do you think we came up with email? Why do you think we invented smart phones?

“We’ve got them checking their email at home, on vacation, at night, on weekends. They’re working even when they’re not at work. And all those overtime hours are free! It’s why we can keep cutting staff and raising profits. We keep them off guard by making them think they’re always about to be fired or outsourced, and we’ve got them!”

Prime Video’s cast also includes Nat Wolff as Craig, Brittany O’Grady as Elaine and Aimee Carrero as Patti.

Tony Basgallop serves as creator and showrunner, and executive produces alongside pilot director Matt Shakman, Waltz, Steve Stark and Andrew Mittman. Kai Dolbashian produces.

All eight episodes of The Consultant premieres February 24 on Prime Video.
