The Hundred Line: Last Defense Academy Hands-On Preview – The Perfect Lesson

The Hundred Line: Last Defense Academy is one of many games I didn’t know much about before GDC 2025. Developed by Too Kyo Games Inc. and Media Vision Inc., this upcoming tactical role-playing game has an intriguing premise that will resonate strongly with diehard fans of Danganronpa, Persona, and other similar titles.

After playing a preview build, I was stunned that I hadn’t heard more about this game sooner, and I believe it will be one of the most talked-about titles this month when it drops on April 24th. Here are more thoughts on The Hundred Line: Last Defense Academy and why it’s worth keeping on your radar.

The First Day Of The Rest Of Your Life

The Hundred Line: Last Defense Academy is a new IP developed by Kazutaka Kodaka, creator of Danganronpa, and Kotaro Uchikoshi, creator of Zero Escape. This exciting collaboration means fans can expect a captivating visual novel art style and proficient tactical role-playing mechanics.

The story revolves around Takumi Sumino, a high school senior living an uneventful everyday life in Tokyo Residential Complex. While heading to class one day with his childhood friend Karua Kashimiya, his world is turned upside down when several unknown monsters invade the town and destroy everything in their path. He is then approached by a strange creature named SIREI. He promises Takumi will have enough power to fight back if he stabs himself in the chest with a unique infusion blade.

Perfect Attendance

After choosing to fight back and protect Karua, Takumi becomes filled with this energy called Hemoanima, which grants him powers. This is where the tactical role-playing mechanics took off as I performed various attacks back-and-forth with these monsters. At the end of the fight, Takumi passes out and wakes up in a classroom with 14 other young adults around my age and SIREI as a commander.

After this gripping introduction, the story gets even more interesting as you interact with these strangers and learn that you are all tasked with defending the school for the next 100 days. The dialogue starts as a stylized visual novel with plenty of text boxes before transforming into sequences where full voice acting is displayed. These conversations add more weight to the overall experience and give players a better idea of each character’s personality.

In addition to the tactical role-playing mechanics, phenomenally complex characters, and beautiful art style, The Hundred Line is also a game about exploration. There are moments when you can explore various rooms in the school and use your free time between missions to engage in team activities and have conversations. Uncovering the secrets behind the game keeps the narrative exciting, and there will be 100 endings based on your decisions.

Final Verdict

So far, The Hundred Line: Last Defense Academy is turning out to be an outstanding tactical role-playing game, and I’ve only begun to scratch the surface. Stay tuned for my in-depth review later this month.
