Wii U Will Not Play DVDs or Blu-Rays

The Wii didn’t do it, and neither will the Wii U. It looks like the only systems in your home doing this will still be the 360 (for DVDs) and the PS3 (Blu-Rays and DVDs) or hell, even the PS2 for DVDs. During an investor Q&A Nintendo president Satoru Iwata had the following to say on the subject:

We feel that enough people already have devices that are capable of playing DVDs and Blu-ray, such that it didn’t warrant the cost involved to build that functionality into the Wii U console because of the patents related to those technologies.

I think that isn’t a big deal, he is probably correct, and it will help keep the price of the console itself down. It’s just unfortunate that Nintendo never got in on this bit of technology earlier. Hopefully the system and the controller support some type of video download and/or streaming services.
