Sony has finally revealed the truth behind the current PSN shutdown which has been going on for the past 2 and a half days. According to Sony the blackout is all due to an “external intrusion”. Sr. Director of Corperate Communications Patrick Seybold released an update on the issue via the Playstation Blog. Below is what he had to offer up to unhappy PSN users.
An external intrusion on our system has affected our PlayStation Network and Qriocity services. In order to conduct a thorough investigation and to verify the smooth and secure operation of our network services going forward, we turned off PlayStation Network & Qriocity services on the evening of Wednesday, April 20th. Providing quality entertainment services to our customers and partners is our utmost priority. We are doing all we can to resolve this situation quickly, and we once again thank you for your patience. We will continue to update you promptly as we have additional information to share.
The European PSN is still down, and I am assuming it is the same for the North American PSN. This comes at a bad time for Sony as three big games released this past week, including Sony exclusive Socom: Special Forces. This is not only bad for gamers but also for content handlers. Playstation Network holds a lot of important gamer related information such as card information, so it is understandable why Sony would want to protect their millions of users worldwide.
