Upcoming racer Need For Speed: Rivals will not be releasing on the Wii U because previous game Most Wanted did not sell very well, Ghost Games have confirmed.
Speaking with The Sixth Axis; Ghost Games’ Game Director Craig Sullivan detailed the reasons behind the lack of Rivals on the Wii U:
“Honestly, it’s not the kind of stuff that I like talking about in detail, that much. We did a load of extra work on the Wii U version, and we had a lot of guys working on that stuff, you know?
“It didn’t really sell that many, in terms of the Wii U market. I would love for it to have, because we put so much effort into that, trust me. I’d love for it to be way bigger than it was, and the same for the Vita.
“[Rivals] is going onto new hardware, and you have to work out where you focus your efforts. The 200 people working on this game are only capable of making so much, and doing so many different versions of the game, so we had to go with where we think the biggest audience will be for the game, and that’s where we are.”
Although this is sad news for Wii U owners, it’s hardly a surprise at all. Many third party games are not releasing on the Wii U now and I won’t be surprised if the Wii U’s third party support almost disappears completely after the new consoles come out next month. The time, money and effort to make an exclusive Wii U version is definitely not worth it for the amount of sales they would get, it is a smart business decision.
Let me know in the comments below if this surprises you at all. Do you think they should make a Wii U version even if it loses them money?
Need For Speed: Rivals releases on the PC, PS3, PS4, 360 and Xbox One next month.
