Suda 51: Sexuality Shouldn’t Be As ‘Big A Taboo’ In The West

CEO of Grasshopper and all round crazy game designer Suda 51 has chimed in on the recent waves of ‘sexuality tropes in video games’ discussion and his answer is sure to incite lots of discussion.

The creator of No More Heroes and new game Killer Is Dead had this to say to Eurogamer“I don’t really use [sex] as something full frontal, but sexuality is a good way to express a certain element in the game,” he said. “Maybe sexuality in games shouldn’t be as big a taboo, but at the same time I live in a country where sexuality is pretty crazy.

“I think Western publishers do similar things, like with [Grand Theft Auto], going out to a strip club and other things,” he said. “But I do understand that if a Western developer was to create something like [Gigolo mode] it could backfire.”

I agree with the points that Suda 51 raises here, I also think that people shouldn’t be scared to put strip clubs in their games or have prostitutes like Grand Theft Auto, those things exist in real life and therefore have a place and right to be in videogames. People shouldn’t be scared to be a little risque in games just because some people might be offended, it’s about pushing boundaries, not being held back out of fear.

That’s just my opinion and I’d like to hear yours as well. What do you think of Suda 51’s comments? Let me know in the comments.
