2K Games and Firaxis have announced that XCOM: Enemy Unknown, their surprise hit from last year, will be making its way onto iOS devices this summer.
The announcement took place at their PAX panel and revealed that the iOS versions will be a ‘complete port’ of the PC and console versions of the game. As of this moment no Android version is planned but according to Firaxis that doesn’t mean it won’t happen at some point.
Jake Solomon, XCOM’s lead designer said “It was something we were really excited to do, we weren’t sure if it was technically possible, but with the Unreal Engine it made it easy to port over.”
“It’s tough to transition a lot of core games to the iPad, because of the touch interface, but XCOM works beautifully because the keyboard and mouse interface works so well.”
It’s quite surprising that a game so large and complete will be available on iOS, however it is fantastic that it will be. At the moment no price has been announced and it will be very interesting to see what price a $60 console game is worth on a mobile device. Time will tell.
