Codenamed "NX", Iwata confirms Nintendo is working on a console.

As if announcing your jumping into the mobile games market isn’t enough, during their press conference with DeNa, Nintendo president Satoru Iwata confirmed that the company is working on a new hardware platform.

As proof that Nintendo maintains strong enthusiasm for the dedicated game system business let me confirm that Nintendo is currently developing a dedicated game platform with a brand new concept under the development codename NX. It is too early to elaborate on the details of this project but we hope to share more information with you next year.

Codenamed “NX”, nothing is known about the platform right now aside from the fact that the newly announced membership system will work for it. While we no news on this system (whether or not it’s handheld), it seems like the best bet would be on a console, which could mean an insanely short lifespan for the Wii U. Absolutely nothing else has been shared, but Iwata said more news will be coming next year.
