2024 was a special year for new game announcements and reveals across various broadcast industry events. From the official return of the Virtua Fighter series to the revival of several Capcom franchises like Onimusha, there is no doubt that the future looks bright. With this in mind, I wanted to put together a quick list of a few game reveals I fully expect to be announced within the next 12 months of this calendar year.
Resident Evil 9
The next installment in the popular Resident Evil series has been long rumored for some time and is one announcement I expected during The Game Awards. With Monster Hunter Wilds primed and ready to take the world by storm when it launches on February 28th, it will be interesting to see if Capcom makes this highly anticipated sequel their next big game announcement. If so, I expect an official reveal trailer later in the year. As for a release window, this could come as soon as late 2025 or spring 2026 depending on where they are in the development cycle.
The Next Final Fight
Street Fighter 6 continues to be a smash hit for Capcom thanks to their ongoing support with yearly character passes featuring fan favorites and fighters from other franchises. However, one particular fighting game franchise keeps getting referenced in the game by way of Metro City and a prominent statue and stadium being built in honor of Mayor Mike Haggar. Is the fighting pass content showcased in the video above the only thing we are getting from Final Fight or is Capcom working on a new game in the series? Given Capcom’s recent track record, I would be willing to bet they are working on a new game and I expect this news to be revealed before the end of 2025.
Housemarque’s Next Game
Returnal launched on PlayStation 5 in 2021 and was a successful launch window AAA title for the console. Months later, they were acquired by Sony Interactive Entertainment and have been very quiet ever since. While Returnal has resurfaced as a comic series with Dark Horse Comics, many have questioned what the studio has been working on. 2025 will mark the 4th anniversary of Returnal so I’ll be surprised if we don’t get a glimpse at what Housemarque is working on now.
Horizon Forbidden West Sequel
Horizon Forbidden West successfully launched in February 2022 and quickly established that Guerrilla Games has more adventures for Aloy. Since confirming that a sequel was already in active development, Guerrilla has been busy working on Lego Horizon Adventures and a Horizon live service game. While Bloomberg’s Jason Schrier reported on the Spawn Wave’s Spawncast that the live service game is most likely the next project, I think we still could get a teaser for Aloy’s next adventure by the end of the year. After all, Sony already has a few live service games on the way like Fairgame$ so it would make more sense to spread out these games over the years.
Half-Life 3
Half-Life 3 is the long-awaited sequel I figured we would never get until recently. Valve released a Half-Life 2: 20th Anniversary documentary that hinted at the future and explained why we never got Half-Life 2: Episode 3. There have also been rumors about playtests starting soon. While Valve hasn’t confirmed this, I think we may at least get an official confirmation that the game is in development before this year ends.
Honorable Mention: The Next NiER Game
NieR: Automata producer Yosuke Saito has hinted that an important franchise-related announcement will be made later this year as part of the 15th anniversary of the series. NieR Replicant ver.1.22474487139… launched in 2021 following the critically-acclaimed NieR: Automata which dropped in 2017. While the next entry might not be released this year, an official reveal trailer makes sense to set the right tone.
This concludes my list of 5 game reveals we expect to see in 2025. Has this list sparked any ideas on new games you want to see announced this year? Please feel free to let us know in the comments section below.
