Netflix Announces New TV Adaptations for World Book Day

Netflix’s newest adaptation Ransom Canyon, based on the book series by Jodi Thomas, delighted fans around the world, debuting with 7.2M views on the Global Top 10 English TV list, and appearing in the Top 10 in 59 countries. Starting April 25, fans can purchase the tie-in book cover edition.

In honor of the success of this series, here’s a look at some of the most anticipated book-to-screen adaptations coming to Netflix this year:

  • El Eternauta | Series based on the graphic novel by Héctor G. Oesterheld and Francisco Solano López | On Netflix April 30
    • Buenos Aires has only seen snowfall three times in its recorded history. And yet, snowflakes begin to fall, coating the ground. It’s beautiful, but unnerving. Something is very, very off about this weather: It’s fatal. Anyone touched by the snowflakes is killed instantly, leading to millions of deaths. But what is this lethal threat, and what other horrors will follow? As survivors emerge, a man named Juan Salvo is among them — and he’s determined to fight back against this invisible force.
  • Midnight Sun & The Twilight Saga | An animated series based on Stephanie Meyer’s 2020 companion novel to her best-selling book series Twilight is coming soon, but while you wait, watch all five Twilight saga films on Netflix May 1 
    • Midnight Sun, Stephenie Meyer’s 2020 companion novel to her best-selling book series Twilight,is set to be adapted into a forthcoming animated series, which is currently in development. A retelling of the first entry in the Twilight story, Midnight Sun unfolds entirely from the perspective of Edward Cullen, the captivating, and yes, extremely sparkly vampire who catches a young Bella Swan’s attention. 
    • The Twilight series, of course, spawned a multi-billion film franchise starring Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson as the central couple of the title film and continuing with the four others in the saga — New Moon, Eclipse, Breaking Dawn Part 1, and Breaking Dawn Part 2. 
  • Forever | Series based on Judy Blume’s groundbreaking 1975 novel | On Netflix May 8
    • Few feelings are as unforgettable as first love. Megaproducer Mara Brock Akil clearly agrees, as her latest series tackles one of the most impactful first-love stories of all time: Forever, by the bestselling young adult author Judy Blume. Brock Akil, who serves as the show’s executive producer and showrunner, told Netflix: “I’ve always credited Judy Blume as part of the seasoning of my voice as a writer. She was one of the first writers I read that dared to be honest about the human condition in young people and you can see traces of her writing style within my own. I’m honored to reimagine one of my favorite books, Forever.”
  • Fear Street: Prom Queen | Film based on the novel by R.L. Stine | On Netflix May 23
    • Get ready to take another walk down Fear Street.The hit trilogy of horror films started and concluded in 2021, with all three installments (1994,1978, and1666) landing at Netflix on consecutive weeks. Now Fear Street: Prom Queen will bring us back to the dark heart of Shadyside. The first three Fear Street films traveled further and further back into the bloody history of the aptly named town. At the end of Part Three, evil seemed vanquished for good — until a post-credits scene showed an unknown figure stealing a sinister tome. Evil never really dies in Shadyside. 
  • The Woman in Cabin 10 | Film based on the novel by Ruth Ware |  On Netflix Fall 2025
    • While on a luxury cruise for a travel assignment, a journalist witnesses a passenger tossed overboard late one night, only to be told that she must have dreamed it, as all passengers are accounted for. Despite not being believed by anyone onboard, she continues to look for answers, putting her own life in danger.
  • Frankenstein | Film based on the iconic novel by Mary Shelley | On Netflix 2025
    • Oscar-winning director Guillermo del Toro (Pinocchio, Cabinet of Curiosities, The Shape of Water) adapts Mary Shelley’s classic tale of Victor Frankenstein, a brilliant but egotistical scientist who brings a creature to life in a monstrous experiment that ultimately leads to the undoing of both the creator and his tragic creation.
  • The Thursday Murder Club | Film based on the novel by Richard Osman | On Netflix 2025
    • The story follows a group of friends in a retirement home who gather to solve murders for fun but find themselves caught in a real case. 
  • Train Dreams | Film based on the novella by Denis Johnson | On Netflix 2025
    • Adapted from the Denis Johnson novella, the film follows Robert Grainer, an average man living in extraordinary times, who worked as a day laborer in the American West at the beginning of the 20th century. Battered by the death of his family, he struggles to adjust to this new environment.
  • My Oxford Year | Film based on the novel My Oxford Year by Julia Whelan, which was adapted from Burnett’s original screenplay | On Netflix 2025
    • When Anna (Carson, also an executive producer on the film), an ambitious young American woman, sets out for the UK and the University of Oxford to fulfill a childhood dream, she’s got her life completely on track. That is, until she meets a charming and clever local who profoundly alters both of their lives.
  • The Ballad of a Small Player | Film based on the novel by Lawrence Osborne | On Netflix 2025
    • When his past and his debts start to catch up with him, a high-stakes gambler laying low in Macau encounters a kindred spirit who might just hold the key to his salvation. Directed by Berger (All Quiet on the Western Front, Your Honor), The Ballad of a Small Player is written by Rowan Joffé (28 Weeks Later, The American) and based on the 2014 novel of the same name by Lawrence Osborne. 
  • Night Always Comes | Film based on the novel by Willy Vlautin | On Netflix 2025 
    • Risking everything to secure a future for herself and her brother, Lynette sets out on a dangerous odyssey in Portland: confronting her own dark past over the course of one propulsive night.
  • The Twits | Animated film based on the 1980 novel by Roald Dahl | On Netflix 2025 
    • This story follows Mr. and Mrs. Twit — who are the miserable owners of a dangerous amusement park — and their meteoric rise to power in their town. The Twits’ takeover leads to an ongoing conflict between them, two children, and a community of magical animals who are determined to stop them.  
  • Death by Lighting | Series based on the non-fiction book Destiny of the Republic by Candice Millard | On Netflix 2025
    • Death by Lightning is a limited drama series that’s based on the epic and stranger-than-fiction true story of James Garfield, reluctant 20th president of the United States, and Charles Guiteau — a man who was not only Garfield’s greatest admirer, but also his assassin.
