New Mixtape: XV – Popular Culture

One of the newer artists capitalizing of the shift in hip hop’s paradigm is Wichita, Kansas artist XV. With his older mixtape Everybody’s Nobody all the way up to Zero Heroes, XV has had no shame in expressing his interest in things sometimes considered taboo for rap artists (just check out his last two album covers). Referencing anime, video games, and even popular primetime television shows, XV has solidified his standing in the music game.

All this things have culminated in his most recent album mixtape Popular Culture. Its nostalgic in its content, quoting Full House, Aaahh! Real Monsters, and even Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. It also stays very true to its name even concerning more recent media, with XV mentioning Breaking Bad and Zombieland and his producers sampling Inception and other popular tv shows and movies in between songs.

Popular Culture comes together as one of the best mixtapes to come out this year, maybe even the last two. Everyone should give it a listen and enjoy the trip down memory lane. The music isn’t too bad either. Enjoy.
