This week’s Throwback Thursday is O.P.P, which became Naughty By Nature’s biggest number one hit back in 1991. To this day there are still some who don’t understand the meaning behind O.P.P, as people used to only memorize the hook but not actually listen to what the song is about.
The term O.P.P is an initialism for “other people’s pussy” and “other people’s penis”. Some may be disgusted by the suggestion, but what grips me about the song is the way Treach broke it down. The way he delivers his verses on this beat is incredible, and it shows how much thought MC’s used to put into their work back in the day. It’s something that doesn’t exist to the same extent in this day and age. Treach allegedly got the idea from a local drug dealer who used to deal on other dealers territories and claim he was down with O.P.M (Other Peoples Money). It’s always fascinating to know how people form the ideas for their best work.
The song has been heard in films and TV shows such as House Party 2, Malibu’s Most Wanted, Jarhead and The Fresh Prince of Bel Air.
