After the wild success of Resident Evil HD, Capcom announced that it would be re-releasing Resident Evil 2. We were unsure if this re-release would be an upscaled remaster like Resident Evil HD or a full-blown remake much in the same way that game was a complete remake of the original PlayStation and Sega Saturn title. Today, we finally have an answer.
Capcom UK’s Senior Marketing Director, Stuart Turner, went on Twitter to clarify this definitively:
Seems to be a few people picking up a mistranslation in our own investor report. RE2 will be a full from the ground up remake NOT a remaster

While we don’t know what this remake will entail exactly, we can make some educated guesses.
We can rule out a game on the scale of recent Resident Evil titles like Revelations 2 or Resident Evil 6. More than likely, this remake will be in the vein of Resident Evil and Resident Evil 0. This means that it will have fixed camera angles and the same control type of those games. Not only would this be more cost-effective for Capcom, but it would also ensure that this remake retains the spirit of the original Resident Evil 2.
While it’s entirely possible that Capcom are making a completely overhauled remake like Square-Enix is doing with Final Fantasy VII, it’s a safer bet to assume they will go with the option I outlined.
Stay tuned for more details on the Resident Evil 2 remake as they develop.
