Sony Online Entertainment (SOE), the subdivision of Sony and developers of Everquest, Planetside, H1Z1, and countless other titles, has just announced that it has been sold off by Sony to Columbus Nova, an investment firm.
“Today, we are pleased to announce that we have been acquired by Columbus Nova, an investment management firm well known for its success with its existing portfolio of technology, media and entertainment focused companies.” The forum post (linked above) stated. “This means that effective immediately SOE will operate as an independent game development studio.”
Also in the post, the people formerly of Sony Online Entertainment announced that they will be changing their name to Daybreak Game Company. Since they are now an independent game development studio, they are now free to operate as a multi-platform company, for PlayStation, Xbox, and mobile as well.
Although this story is still developing, Daybreak Game Company has assured fans that nothing will change with the direction of their upcoming games. The company plans to continue supporting H1Z1, Everquest Next, and other games that it started at Sony Online Entertainment, stating:
So what exactly does this mean for you? It will be business as usual and all SOE games will continue on their current path of development and operation. In fact, we expect to have even more resources available to us as a result of this acquisition. It also means new exciting developments for our existing IP and games as we can now fully embrace the multi-platform world we are living in.
