God of Rock PC Preview – Guitar Hero Meets Street Fighter

Witness the grand mashing of rhythm music and fighting genres! Mixing genres that supposedly don’t go together isn’t easy, yet God of Rock is looking to prove anything can be done if creative enough.

Gods and Rockers

“The mysterious God of Rock has revived the souls of the universe’s greatest musicians to clash for his entertainment. Revitalized with new bodies and new powers, each musician will become a contestant in his game, battling it out with each other for musical supremacy on a global stage.”

Let’s Rock and Combo

Imagine guitar hero notes being mashed to the beat all while beating up your opponent. Each note is a hit to the enemy’s health and increases your special move meters. These original tracks increase in difficulty as you progress through the song, making it difficult for yourself and your opponent to receive 100% accuracy. Some notes even require two or three button presses simultaneously!

I found the learning curve frustrating but it’s only because, just like in any fighting game, you must learn your moves. Memorization and strategy are key to winning your match once the difficulty ramps up at the peak of a battle. The special moves are a bit easier to pull off since players will be scrambling to press notes. On some characters, for example, players will input a “Hadouken” input to throw out a super in the middle of a match. This will be an amazing experience once they have their ranked multiplayer rolling out. Practice will make perfect.

Our preview allowed us to play training mode, local matches, and the track editor. This editor is another edition that asks for patience and practice. You can customize the beats and notes for others to play and be challenged. I don’t have the creative chops to come up with anything, but it’s a great concept for those who want to tweak their experiences.

I really enjoy the art style, music, and colors. It fits right into the fighting game gang such as Street Fighter V and DragonBall Fighterz. It kind of feels as if the character models from Guitar Hero morphed into fighters and just started brawling on stage. I do however have one gripe. I enjoy the presentation, but I found myself too distracted by staring at notes and focusing on pressing buttons at the right time to really appreciate the battle going on. There are some awesome background designs and cool, quick special moves, but with all the chaos, I think memorization will make enjoying the game easier for its art and animations.

Battle to the Beat

Players will have 12 fighters to choose from. Each one is nicely designed. Some are hilarious like the Elvis look-alike King to the more seriously no-nonsense look of Rosetta. All with unique combos, specials, and reversals. Additionally, players can choose from 8 stages and hear 40 original tracks.

I see a lot of potential in this game’s future. Additional characters, levels, songs (hopefully some licensed tracks), and customization. I wish I was able to enjoy the story mode which will be included in the final release, but this at least gives me a head start with it when it releases on April 18th on Steam. I can’t wait to see what Modus Studios has planned with this Rock monster.
