There are a lot of terrifying enemies in The Evil Within but none more so than the Keeper. In this latest developer video, game industry veteran Adam Sessler talks to creator Shinji Mikami and concept artist Ikumi Nakamura about what it took to bring the character to life and what inspired its design.
Nakamura’s biggest inspiration for the design of the Keeper was Hellraiser. She said that movie’s monsters felt like something out of a nightmare and she wanted to convey that with the Keeper. She put a safe on his head since it was something that the main character encountered early in the game.
She did lament the fact that the Keeper materializes out of the ground and isn’t just part of the world like all of the other enemies. To her, it makes it seem as if he is a fantasy and not something real. This is something that amused Mikami but he ultimately understood where Nakamura was coming from.
The Evil Within is out now for the PC, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360 and Xbox One. Don’t forget to check out our review of the game which was written by Garrett Glass.
