Tha Dogg Pound take this week’s spot for Throwback Thursday with their debut single “What Would You Do” released in 1995.
Daz Dillinger teamed up with Dr. Dre for the production for the song which is from the short film “Murder Was The Case” official soundtrack. The film was based on Snoop Dogg‘s fictional death and resurrection after cutting a deal with the devil. This film was co-directed by Dr. Dre and Fab Five Freddy.
“What Would You Do” was also featured on the “Natural Born Killers” soundtrack even though it never featured in the actual movie itself.
“What Would You Do” was seen as a diss track towards various artists such as B.G. Knocc Out, Dresta, Eazy-E & Cold 187um. Eazy returned the receipt with the tracks “Ole School Shit” and his own version of “What Would You Do” called “Wut Would You Do“. B.G. Knocc Out & Dresta responded with “D.P.G./K“.
The initial video was quite a basic one with Daz, Kurupt and Snoop chilling in a bar then later Daz and Kurupt are riding around their hood. However, a second video was made which contains cameos from main Death Row members such as Dr. Dre and Lady of Rage.
The “Murder Was The Case” soundtrack is a very solid CD for such a short film and I highly recommend it to any Death Row or west coast hip-hop fans.
