After releasing his “Lost Jewlry” EP this week, TheKoalition.com has chosen Raekwon‘s track from 1995 titled “Ice Cream” for Throwback Thursday.
“Ice Cream” was the third solo single from Raekwon The Chef for his classic 90’s album “Only Built 4 Cuban Linx…” and went on to be the most successful single released for the album.
The song also features fellow Wu-Tang Clan members Method Man, Ghostface Killah (who is featured very heavily on the album) and Cappadonna however, they were never officially credited for appearing on the song. RZA takes the credit for production for “Ice Cream” which has since went on to be a classic beat used by many MC’s.
Eddie Murphy is sampled throughout the song with RZA taking inspiration from his classic “Delirious” stand-up show from 1983. The beat is also in a similar vein to an ice cream van’s jingle.
The song is a far cry from any of your typical modern-day Hip-Hop tracks dedicated to women – no singing or simping are involved. The title of the song is based on the overall concept of the track, which is using ice cream flavours as metaphors for different types of women and how they love their “Ice Cream“.
After the huge critical acclaim for “Only Built 4 Cuban Linx…“, Raekwon went on to release “Only Built 4 Cuban Linx…pt. II” in 2009 which faired very well too. Part 3 is expected to drop in 2014. “Only Built 4 Cuban Linx…” was part of the New York “Mafioso Rap” style which was a popular theme for other artists such as AZ, Jay-Z, Notorious B.I.G and thought to be originator of the genre – Kool G Rap.
I own “Only Built 4 Cuban Linx…” and I can safely recommend it to any of our Koalitioners and it is also available on Amazon.
