Earlier this week we reported that Microsoft will publish Rise of the Tomb Raider. For many, this signaled that the game may possibly never come out for the PlayStation 4 and PC. Thanks to Game Informer who contacted Square-Enix about this, we now have confirmation that the game will in fact be released on non-Xbox systems.
“Our partnership with Microsoft on ‘Rise of the Tomb Raider’ does have a duration, but we aren’t discussing those details at this time and are focused on collaborating to deliver a great game on Xbox One and Xbox 360,” said a SQE representative to Game Informer via email.
This shouldn’t be all that surprising. It’s all in how PR companies phrase things and it was always clear that Rise of the Tomb Raider would only be on Xbox systems for a limited amount of time. Remember, it is set to be an exclusive for “Holiday 2015.” Outside of that window, it can be released on other systems. This means that the game could possibly be released in the Spring of 2016 on the PlayStation 4.
Tomb Raider has long been associated with being on PlayStation consoles and even the multiplatform iterations of the series have always sold more on PlayStation than on anything else. While this was a shrewd business move by Microsoft, it will ultimately be undermined when Rise of the Tomb Raider is released on PlayStation 4 and (potentially) sells more on that system.
We’ll keep you guys updated on any further developments as they happen.
