MainFrames was announced this past Summer by France-based developer Assoupi and The Arcade Crew. Described as a fast-paced side-scrolling platformer, MainFrames revolves around a Floppy disk appropriately named Floppy as the program explores various browser windows and desktop icons on a PC monitor.
After spending time with the upcoming demo ahead of Steam Next Fest, I have to say that I was pleasantly surprised by the concept and walked away eager to see the final product. Here are more of my thoughts on what you can expect if you check out the demo.
The 30-minute demo opened with Floppy on a quest to discover his meaning. The goal is to jump across the desktop monitor using several browser windows. Shortly after doing this, Floppy is introduced to a character named Key who grants permissions to other browsers that are not easily accessible just by jumping. This is where things got more interesting as there was even more emphasis on platforming and problem-solving to figure out how to maneuver across each window.
The rest of the demo introduced a few other characters but didn’t dive into their roles within the storyline. The main highlight of these segments was the comedic tone and interactions they had with each other.b This is one aspect of MainFrames that I feel the developers will nail effortlessly because there is no shortage of jokes that can be created between computer terminology and functional commands.
MainFrames has a beautiful art style that fits perfectly with the overall concept. The characters are aesthetically pleasing and will feel familiar to those who see similar icons on their computers daily. I also liked that the demo has full controller support which I recommend using to get the most out of moving across each obstacle.
While my time was incredibly short with MainFrames, I’m looking forward to seeing how the final product turns out. Be sure to wishlist or download the demo today before it’s too late.
