Maybe the time of the socially aware artist at the forefront is incoming? Highly unlikely for now, but I’ve gotta say I’m enjoying these live performances from popular artists. Previously J. Cole added a piercing verse to his “Be Free” performance on Letterman. This time around, Kendrick Lamar hits The Colbert Report with “untitled”.
In “Be Free”, Cole was certainly inspired by events surrounding the likes of Eric Garner and John Crawford. Kendrick’s has a vast scope in its different perspectives across skin colors, but it comes right back to the roots with the final chant before closing. It’s a clever, funky joint that allows him to shine with his delivery. Terrace Martin, Annawise and Thundercat were featured on the band and I really hope this live groove will translate to the cd quality release.
