Hinterland Studios announced earlier their new project, The Long Dark. What’s this, you’ve never heard of Hinterland Studios? Well, allow me to go over their background, and maybe then you’ll care about The Long Dark.
Hinterland Studios comprises of ex Bioware, Relic, Riot, and Volition staff members. Some of these developers have worked on titles such as Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine, Far Cry 3, God of War, and Knights of the Old Republic, among many others.Together, the experienced developers are pooling their expertise and resources to create a first-person survival simulation called The Long Dark. The Long Dark will take place in a North America without power. As a result, the protagonists will have to survive the harsh cold climate of the northern wilderness.
The Long Dark will also feature many staples from the developers’ collective portfolio. According to Hinterland, “gameplay emphasizes exploration to gather resources and knowledge about the world, while mastering a deep survival simulation to overcome the myriad natural and man-made hazards of the new frontier. Players will also face difficult moral choices that will affect the outcome of gameplay, story, and ultimately, the course of humanity’s recovery.”
The Long Dark will be released episodically for PC, Mac and Linux. Hinterland also plans to explore cross-media storytelling; however, there’s not enough details on how this will work. In the meantime, Hinterland definitely has the experience and the credentials to create The Long Dark. I expect the game to have a deep system with excellent story telling.
Hinterland will provide more details when it announces its Kickstarter campaign next week.
