The Scarecrow returns to unite an impressive roster of supervillains, including Penguin, Two-Face, Harley Quinn, Firefly, Poison Ivy, and Riddler to destroy The Dark Knight forever. The most intriguing member of this alliance, however, is the deadly and enigmatic Arkham Knight.

For the first time, players have the opportunity to explore all of Gotham City in a completely open and free-roaming game world. More than five times that of Batman: Arkham City, Gotham City has been brought to life with the same level of intimate, hand-crafted attention to detail for which the Arkham games are known.

Players can fully immerse themselves in the chaos that is erupting in the streets of Gotham. Encounters with high-profile criminal masterminds are guaranteed while also offering gamers the opportunity to focus on and takedown individual villains or pursue the core narrative path.”

VILLAINS

Scarecrow is going to be the leading villain in Arkham Knight. Rocksteady says he’s an expert in using fear tactics, and that players won’t know what to expect or believe. Harley Quinn, on the other, hand is now leading her own gang and pursuing her own objectives. And then there’s Arkham Knight, created specifically for the game. Watch the video above to learn more about Scarecrow’s Rogues Gallery, which includes Two-Face, The Penguin, the Riddler, the Arkham Knight, Harley Quinn, and Poison Ivy.

Arkham Knight //

The Arkham Knight is a new character revealed to be one of the main antagonists in Batman: Arkham Knight. He is voiced by Troy Baker.

Jonathan Crane/Scarecrow //

Freed from Joker’s domineering personality, she’s become a dangerous, unpredictable new force in the Gotham City underworld. /// COMBAT

Arkham Knight will not only enhance combat but will also introduce some new mechanics.

For example, Rocksteady has “supercharged” the free flow combat system, giving players more options, capabilities and the freedom to approach combat how they want.

Arkham Knight will also include weapon steals, and a throw counter that which allows players to throw a thug at other enemies. Additionally, players can use gadgets while gliding “which is a really great feature for starting combat and for general exploration,” according to Rocksteady’s Gaz Deaves.

Top of Page

/// BATMOBILE & BATSUIT

For the first time in the series, Arkham Knight will introduce the Batmobile as a driveable vehicle. In an interview with PSLS, Rocksteady’s Gaz Deaves said that the Batmobile was “the missing piece from the Arkham experience.” Watch this trailer showcasing the Batmobile and how it can transition into “Battle Mode,” which can fire devastating blasts to take down the enemy. The video below details Batmobile’s Battle Mode features.

In addition to getting the keys to the Batmobile, the Dark Knight has a fancy new suit of armor in Rocksteady’s latest game. Rocksteady had stated that they wanted to highlight the interaction between Batman and the Batmobile. We see that the suit mirrors the design of the car in a lot of ways.

The new suit impacts gameplay as well, as it enhances some of Batman’s abilities, particularly in the way the Batman and the car work together. Batman doesn’t start his Arkham Knight adventure with a new suit. The updated armor is a necessity once the Batmobile is introduced. After seeing the intense way he enters and exits the vehicle, it’s clear why a sturdier shell is needed. The design team worked to ensure that Batman’s car and his updated armor were visually – and functionally – compatible with one another.

Batman’s cape looks different in Arkham Knight, too. It works the same way – even allowing Batman to glide more effectively thanks to an upgrade – but now its design supports its in-game functionality. The cape still covers the shoulders, but now he has the armor on top.

/// GADGETS & THE DISRUPTOR

Gamers have at their disposal more combat moves and high-tech gadgetry than ever before. The new ‘gadgets while gliding’ ability allows Batman to deploy gadgets such as batarangs, the grapnel gun or the line launcher mid-glide while Batman’s utility belt is once again upgraded to include all new gadgets that expand his range of forensic investigation, stealth incursion and combat skills.

Batman: Arkham Knight will introduce a new gadget in Batman’s arsenal: The Disruptor. This new gadget has been tailored to meet the challenges of Gotham City’s vast landscape through its long range capabilities, and provides options that bolster Batman’s ability to control engagements like never before.

Core Abilities

The Disruptor has three charges per engagement, requiring Batman to carefully select how best to use each charge in order to compliment his plan of attack. The core abilities at Batman’s disposal out of the box are:

►Jamming enemies weapons when they attempt to fire at Batman
►Exploding enemy weapons (by using two charges on the same weapon)
►Rigging weapon crates to shock enemies who try to arm themselves
►Tagging vehicles with tracking devices for Batmobile pursuits

Expanding Batman’s Tactical Options

The Disruptor provides Batman with greater tactical flexibility in any engagement before it even begins. Before combat, the Disruptor can be used to jam the weapons of an opponent, buying Batman precious time to gain the advantage and land the first attack. In Predator scenarios, the Disruptor can be employed to target various enemy devices by rendering them inactive, or even turning them against their owners.

Additionally, the Disruptor is equipped with a long range scope, allowing Batman to survey and set up control of the situation from the rooftops of Gotham City with pinpoint accuracy.

Extensive Upgrades
The Disruptor has an extensive selection of upgrades to choose from – each providing their own unique advantage to Batman.

For example, the ‘additional charge’ upgrade provides more simultaneous options for each engagement, allowing additional greater situational control over the devices and weapons that could become an obstacle.

Alternatively, a high level upgrade is available to Batman allowing him to hack and disrupt the turret of the Arkham Knight’s Drone Tanks. This creates the opportunity for Batman to draw the Drones attention on foot, only for its turret to backfire and self-destruct when it attempts to fire.

As a sneak peek of how the Sniper Disruptor works in the game, we’ve also got an exclusive GIF to share of Batman disabling a thug’s weapon prior to beginning a combat encounter.

/// DUAL PLAY

Game Director Sefton Hill said that Arkham Knight won’t include multiplayer because Rocksteady didn’t have any time to work on it. Instead, the game will feature Dual Play, which is a single-player mechanic where combat is focused and specific to certain types of missions, during which Batman and his partner take on a group of thugs together. Getting the combo high enough, grants you the ability to enter Dual Play takedowns. Watch the video below to see how it’s done.
