When Patrick Jean first released his short film “Pixels“, it was an innovative and creative touch on disaster films. Tetris blocks and Space Invaders laying waste to our world? Sign me up! However, all good things must meet their end someday, and that someday was when Columbia Pictures decided to develop a feature film based on the short, starring Adam Sandler, Kevin James, and so many other people.
The film follows the premise that, in the early 80’s, NASA sent a time capsule featuring video games into space, which Aliens then found and took as a declaration of war (huh?). Sandler plays Sam Brenner, a former gaming champion (again..what?) who is asked to defeat the aliens by his childhood best friend, who just so happens to be the President of the United States (Kevin James). After watching it, you might be asking yourself a couple of questions:
- What is happening here?
- Why is the President getting his hands dirty fighting Donkey Kong?
- Why is Kevin James the President?
- What is Peter Dinklage doing?
- Seriously, what’s going on here?
As with some things, we may never know the answers to those burning questions. To the movies credit, the pixel art for video game characters looks extremely well done, and since it hasn’t released yet (it’s slated for July 24), we can still hope it’ll be decent! (Don’t bet on it, though.)
