Due to Microsoft dropping the price of the Xbox One to $349 during the holiday season, it managed to beat out the PlayStation 4 and Wii U. This has been confirmed by Microsoft today.
“The past year was a fantastic one for the video game industry – and Xbox One ended 2014 with an unprecedented holiday season, becoming the best-selling console in the U.S. in November and December,” says Will Tuttle who is the Editor-In-Chief of Xbox Wire. “In fact, weekly average sales during these months outpaced Xbox 360 by 50 percent at the same point in its lifecycle.” The Xbox One also sold more games in November and December than any of the current-gen consoles.
This news is obviously good for Microsoft whose current-gen system had been in second place to Sony’s PlayStation 4 during most of 2014. Still, this news shouldn’t be all that surprising considering that the Xbox One was $50 cheaper. People looking for a new console will go for the more affordable option after all.
What remains to be seen is whether or not Microsoft will continue this trend. They just announced that starting tomorrow, the Xbox One will once again get another price drop to $349 though they didn’t say how long this would last for. Microsoft knows exactly why they won the lead over Sony so we’ll definitely see them drop the price of the Xbox One as often as possible to try to stay ahead of their competitor. Still, with the PlayStation 4’s impressive sales, it will be hard for the Xbox One to catch up, let alone overtake it this year.
