Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain Reveal Trailer

Metal Gear mastermind Hideo Kojima revealed Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain today during his GDC session. He confirmed that Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeros and The Phantom Pain are one in the same, and that both titles together make Metal Gear Solid 5. Confusing I know, but I’ve got to hand it to Kojima as he sure knows how to lead us on. Kojima Productions first teased The Phantom Pain at last year’s Spike VGAs, announcing the game under the fake studio name Moby Dick Studios. Prior to that we had been shown a trailer for Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeros at Pax Prime.

Kojima said that Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain will be open world. The game will begin with Snake who has been in a coma for nine years. A fellow patient named Ishmal (voiced by Kiefer Sutherland) helps Snake escape the health facility, whilst Snake struggles to walk. Snake will have trouble moving during the entire open sequence, but once he makes his escape with Ishmal he regains his ability to walk. At this point the player will be able to freely travel the open world.

I’m unsure weather a story heavy game such as Metal Gear Solid can work as in an open world setting, but I’m confident enough in Hideo’s ability to tell compelling tales that the change is forgivable.

Kojima also held a Fox Engine demonstration at GDC, and more information can be found at VG247.

Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain will supposedly be available for Playstation 3 and Xbox 360, though the game was running on PC which means we may also see it there. Let us know what you think of this spectacular announcement.
