Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford has announced that a new Brothers in Arms game is coming and that Furious 4 (which was previously a Brothers in Arms game) is now a standalone title that is still in production.
Pitchford announced that Furious 4 had “evolved” away from being a Brothers in Arms title and had become “something else”. He added that fans still wanted an authentic Brothers in Arms experience which is why they started work on a faithful sequel to the series.
Check out the highlights from his IGN interview at DICE below:
“Imagine if our game design wanted to iterate into something that wasn’t true to what Brothers in Arms is, but we still called it Brothers in Arms anyway,” Pitchford explained. “We would eventually be held accountable by people that want Brothers in Arms to be Brothers in Arms. When you feel like there’s a radical shift that you need to make, it’s tough for people. Inertia’s a bitch. Gearbox and Ubisoft have had a great relationship, but that’s tough, to go through that tension.”
“Most people will not recognize it as ever having anything to do with Brothers in Arms, if you’ve seen the Furious 4 demo or you go back and watch that stuff, you’ll notice the DNA. You can feel the DNA, because it’s an iterative, continuous development process. But it’s a process that decided to unhinge itself from Brothers in Arms and go where it needed to go.”
When asked about the publisher for the new game Pitchford said “Ubi will not publish the new brand. We haven’t signed the next Brothers in Arms game with anyone yet, but Ubisoft’s a great publisher. They’ve been a great partner for Brothers in Arms for many years.”
It makes sense to make a new Brothers in Arms game that caters to the long time fans of the series. Furious 4 seemed to be going away from what Brothers in Arms was all about and that would have alienated fans. To keep developing Furious as a standalone title seems like the right thing to do, and it means that they can make the game they want without being constrained to what a Brothers in Arms game should be like.
