Today Sony announced that the Playstation 4 sold over 1 million units in North America during the system’s launch day!
The news broke via a tweet from the studio’s President Shuhei Yoshida who proudly proclaimed; ““PS4 has sold through over 1 million units within 24 hours of the launch in North America!”
The PS4’s debut is now the Playstation brand’s most successful launch to date, overtaking the Japanese PS2 launch which saw 980,000 units shipped on day one.
This news also comes hot on the heels of the Wii U’s first anniversary. Nintendo’s latest console launched in North America on November 18th 2012 and has since only managed to sell 4 million units worldwide.
The Playstation 4 will be released in Europe on November 29th and in Japan on February 22nd. Sony expects to sell 5 million units by the end of March 2014 but at this rate they may even exceed their own expectations.
