Shigeru Miyamoto has said that Mario was almost the lead character in upcoming Nintendo shooter Splatoon, the news comes from an interview in Edge.
The squid based ink shooter could have been lead by Mario, if not for Miyamoto’s reluctance to rely on Mario for every game.
He said on the matter:
“There were heated debates over who the main player character should be. Whether it should be Mario, or a squid.
“When we talked about the possibility of it being Mario, of course we could think of the advantages: anybody would be willing to touch it as soon as we announced that we had the new Mario game.
“But at the same time, we had some worries. If it were Mario, we wouldn’t be able to create any new IP.”
It’s probably a good job that they went with a squid instead of Mario, not every Nintendo game needs to have Mario in it, it will be very nice to have a new IP for once from Nintendo. Actually, would Mario squirting ink even make sense at all!?
This is a good decision from Nintendo, but probably a bittersweet one, I bet the game would sell more if Mario was in the game. Let me know what you think in the comments section.
