Zack Snyder is finally home and from the opening credits of Army Of The Dead you can feel his energy as the beats of ‘Viva Las Vegas’ fill the room (or theater). As flesh-eating zombies are outnumbering casinos and visitors, the camera happily cuts to a group of cannibalistic topless showgirls taking down a man in Jacuzzi. Slot-machines are turned over as zombies ransack the floor on the haunt for blood. But it’s the lopsided wig wearing Elvis impersonator who stares in the camera as pure chaos erupts that makes you know just what kind of movie audiences are in for.
Gone from the pressures of Warner Bros., Snyder’s thriller is an epic heist flick where months after the fall of Vegas, a rich hotel owner with government ties, Bly Tanaka (Hiroyuki Sanada), enlists a group of mercenaries to enter into the the sin city of zombies to steal $200 million in a nearly impenetrable safe.
What results is Scott Ward (Dave Bautista), a decorated hero who saved the Secretary of Defense from the Vegas downfall assembling a group for the mission, including his estranged daughter Kate (Ella Purnell). To make things even more dire, they have to secure the money within 48 hours, before the U.S. drops a nuclear warhead on the city.
With a zombie tiger, alpha zombies, a complicated father-daughter relationship, and time running out, Snyder’s Army of the Dead is a 148-minute movie that lays the groundwork for its own zombieverse.
