D23 Expo Interviews Movies

Captain America: New World Order Is a Paranoid Thriller; The Leader, Isaiah Bradley & More Return

After much speculating, the cast of Captain America: New World Order has been revealed out of Marvel’s D23 Expo.

Anthony Mackie, who has played superhero Sam Wilson, aka the Falcon, in the Marvel Cinematic Universe since 2014’s Captain America: The Winter Soldier is back as the new Captain America for the first time. The cast of the fourth Captain America movie will also include Shira Haas as Sabra, Tim Blake Nelson as The Leader, as well as Danny Ramirez and Carl Lumbly, who appeared in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier Disney+ series, as Joaquin Torres and Isaiah Bradley, respectively.

Fresh off the D23 stage Lumbly said, “It was stunning for one thing, you got a little myopic when you first go on stage. So, I saw the audience in front of me and then slowly as we were there it widened out to that crowd of people. To see that universe of people, it was wonderful feeling that energy because everyone’s giving all their attention and all their positive vibes.”

Ramirez added, “They are just so excited about this new project, it kind of took me by surprise. Just feeling walking into that wave of energy, a was beaming the entire time. It was like this is nuts.”

Tim Blake Nelson, who last appeared in 2008’s Incredible Hulk, will return as The Leader. Carl Lumbly is back as original super soldier Isaiah Bradley after playing him in Falcon and the Winter Soldier. Danny Ramirez returns as Joaquin Torres, while MCU newcomer Shira Haas will play Israeli hero Sabra.

Director Julius Onah described the movie as a “paranoid thriller,” while Anthony praised the movie with, “I’m nervous! I’m excited. It’s everything I expected it to be.”

Mackie has also played Sam Wilson in Captain America: Civil War (2016) and Avengers: Endgame (2019), which saw Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) pass the Captain America shield to him. Mackie’s Wilson finally accepted the mantle of Captain America by the end of his Disney+ series, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier (2021), which also starred Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes/The Winter Soldier and dealt with questions of legacy, racism, and saw Wilson failing to get a bank loan.

When asked about starring in New World Order, Mackie said, “It’s amazing. I’ve always come out as a secondary character in a movie, it’s really humbling to come out as the lead character. For the first time in a movie being in this universe for so long it felt great. It’s funny being an actor in a Marvel film is a truly life-affirming experience because most people don’t have the opportunity to be completely surrounded by and indulge in the feeling of people actually loving them, so when you come out on stage and people [are] like, ‘Oh my god, I love your character. I love this guy.’ I love that; it’s really touching.”

Director Julius Onah added, “It’s incredible. These are the most passionate fans. Being able to share this with them and just get that lift you get from the genuine passion they have, it’s incredible and really inspiring. He’s Sam Wilson and the new Captain America. It’s just so exciting to be able to take this story in a new direction also with Danny Rameriz and Carl Lumbley and Tim Blake Nelson. We’ve got a brilliant cast and company of actors. So, it’s going to be a really wild ride and exciting movie. It’s all you can hope for. It’s a real dream come true and its sort of surreal. This is the character means a lot to so many of people and being able to follow in the footsteps of some pretty remarkable filmmakers in telling a Captain America story is really humbling and exciting.”

The series co-starred Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes, aka the Winter Soldier, and Emily VanCamp as Sharon Carter, a former CIA agent from the Captain America movies. It also introduced Wyatt Russell as the faux Captain America John Walker, who turned into the villainous U.S. Agent. Top Gun: Maverick actor Ramirez was introduced as Joaquin Torres, a new ally to Wilson’s Cap, and Daniel Bruhl returned as the evil Baron Zemo in the series.

Captain America: New World Order hails from Falcon and the Winter Soldier creator Malcolm Spellman, who is writing the script with Dalan Musson, a writer on the show. The Cloverfield Paradox director Dierctor is directing,
