Welcome to another episode of our Throwdown podcast. This is a show where we discuss video games, pop culture and tech in an honest and uncompromising fashion. You won’t get any bullshit here.
Tonight’s featured topic is about video game embargoes. This week showed the world how embargoes can be used by developers to withhold information from the public. This was the case with Assassin’s Creed Unity, a game that had its embargo lift a full twelve hours after it was released. We contrast this with Dragon Age: Inquisition‘s embargo date which was more than a week BEFORE its release. What do embargoes say about a publisher’s faith in their game and what do we think of them overall? We delve into this topic head on.
Not much on the gaming news front but we have some interesting tidbits to discuss. Pepsi has confirmed that they are creating Dorito’s flavored Mountain Dew, thus combining gamer’s (supposed) favorite things to put down their gullets. Will this drink be Halo 5′s sponsor? Speaking of Geoff Keighley, he is producing the Game Awards and is funding it completely out of pocket. Who knew video game journalists made that much bank? Lastly, we talk about how Guardians of the Galaxy star Chris Pratt turned down the lead role in the Uncharted movie. Can we really blame him considering the usual quality of video game movies?
Only one thing on the pop culture news docket tonight. Recently, Toby Kebbell who will be playing Doctor Doom in the upcoming Fantastic Four movie revealed that his character will not be a powerful dictator but an angry blogger. Is Fox purposely trying to fuck this franchise over? We explain why this movie is shaping up like this by exploring the mind of a typical Hollywood movie executive.
Over on the tech side of things, we talk about Sony’s recently announced TV streaming service, PlayStation Vue. We discuss why this may be another nail in the coffin of cable companies. Streaming services require solid internet speeds and things may have been helped by President Obama who has decided to endorse net-neutrality which should make the internet more fair and open to all. Finally, we give our thoughts on the biggest news of the week which was the comet landing. This is another step towards our inevitable future in space and we give our thoughts on what this means. We also bemoan the fact that most people were too distracted by pictures of a wanna be porn star’s ass to care enough about this monumental achievement.
