What We Want From Dragon Ball Super

Last week it was announced that Dragon Ball Z would be returning to TV after eighteen years, with a new series called Dragon Ball Super. The show will follow on from Dragon Ball Z, after the defeat of Majin Buu.

Dragon Ball Z has recently regained its popularity with the Dragon Ball Z: Battle of the Gods, and Dragon Ball Z: Ressurection F movies. So it’s assumed that these new TV shows will reference the events of the movies.

Original creator Akira Toriyama will thankfully be overseeing the project, and this means that Dragon Ball GT will be erased from cannon completely.

With all this new information, it leaves the question open: What do we want from a new Dragon Ball series? Read our list below, and let us know what you would like to see in Dragon Ball Super.

STRONGER SUPPORTING CHARACTERS

With the new movie focusing heavily on Goku and Vegeta as Earth’s heroes, it seems like secondary characters such as Gohan, Trunks, Goten and Piccolo are even more useless than they were by the end of the Buu saga.

Gohan was once the strongest fighter on Earth, and Trunks and Goten are supposed to be the next generation. So it would be nice to see these characters be useful in the new series.

If Dragon Ball Super carries on from the Dragon Ball Z: Ressurection F movie, then both Goku and Vegeta would have reached new levels of power. My hope is that at least Gohan will be able to reach this new level in the series, and also that the base Super Saiyan form doesn’t become underpowered as a result.

As for Piccolo, it would be nice to see someone other than a Saiyan be useful on the battlefield. Piccolo has many unique talents, so I’d love to see him show his experience by taking out some enemies.

THROW VEGETA A BONE

Vegeta is one of Dragon Ball Z‘s most celebrated characters, and a personal favorite of mine. One of the biggest criticisms from Vegeta fans is that Goku always steals his thunder. Vegeta spent the entire Dragon Ball Z series trying to get as powerful as Goku, and the only time he really gets to shine is when he defeats Android 19. Besides that small victory, Vegeta never gets his moment to save the day.

With Vegeta playing such a vital part in Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection F, I hope it means that we’re going to see Vegeta finally get his moment to surpass Kakarot (Goku’s Saiyan name). Even if it’s short lived.

MORE BEERUS AND WHIS

I’m sure that both the Battle of the Gods and Resurrection F movies will be cannon to this new TV series. So my hope is that Beerus and Whis will be in the show. As someone who knows what happens in Resurrection F, I don’t want to give too much away, but let’s just say that there’s a lot more we need to know about Whis.

At the end of Dragon Ball Z: Battle of the Gods, Beerus also alludes to the fact that there are more gods in the universe that are stronger than he is. Perhaps we’ll get an entire god saga with Beerus and Whis coaching the new Super Saiyan Gods?

VILLAINS WITH REAL MOTIVES

To me, Frieza was the greatest Dragon Ball Z villain. It was the first time we saw an entire universe cower at the ruthlessness of a character.

Cell was awesome, but his only motive was perfection. Once Cell reached perfection he only wanted to test it out by throwing a tournament. So he never seemed quite as ruthless as Frieza to me.

Kid Buu was certainly ruthless, and all he understood was destruction. However, his lack of intelligence makes him only a threat on the battlefield. Frieza had an agenda to rule the universe, which I find to be a far more fascinating journey than just destroying everything in sight for no reason.

So I hope that in Dragon Ball Super we get to see more enemies along the lines of Frieza. We want villains that have more of an agenda beyond destroying everything. We’ve seen so many enemies in Dragon Ball by now, so they need to re-invent the wheel when it comes to creating a threat.

KEEP THE NUMBER OF TRANSFORMATIONS TO A MINIMUM

By the end of Dragon Ball Z, the transformations were getting slightly out of control. When Goku first turned Super Saiyan it was such a monumental moment. Then afterwards it seemed like everybody was becoming a Super Saiyan, even though it was something that was meant to be hard to accomplish. Then we started seeing the Saiyan’s ascend beyond Super Saiyan, and by the end of the series Goku had achieved Super Saiyan 3.

Now with the Battle of the Gods and Resurrection F movies we have a whole new level for our heroes to reach, Super Saiyan god. Here’s where the humor comes in: The Resurrection F movie has actually introduced a level known as ‘Super Saiyan God Super Saiyan’. Yes, that’s the actual name of the transformation. Ridiculous right?

What we want is for the transformations to be streamlined. It’s already been confirmed that Toriyama wants to erase Super Saiyan 2 and 3. So let’s hope we end up with just the following:

  • Super Saiyan
  • Super Saiyan God
  • Super Saiyan God Super Saiyan (Please rename to Super Saiyan God 2)

Limiting it to just those three levels is enough. Anything more will be overkill.

WHAT’S ON YOUR WISHLIST?

Dragon Ball Super will air this July in Japan. We’re not sure when we’ll get an English subtitle or dubbed version, but let’s hope it’s not too long. Before then, be sure to let us know what’s on your wishlist for Dragon Ball Super.
